However, this question isn't easy to answer; it depends entirely on who you ask, as different people and different gameplay experiences may yield different results.

Reasons for Being Too Easy

A significant number of players, especially veteran players and those pursuing the most advanced builds, believe that Patch 0.5.0 is too easy, especially after Patch 0.5.2, which comprehensively weakened all monsters and bosses, directly reducing the difficulty of many of the game's most challenging battles.

Previously, the notoriously difficult boss Jamanra had its health reduced by a full 17%; Blade of the Mists Siora's attack animation was lengthened, and her most dangerous skill was made parryable with reduced damage; simultaneously, the most lethal attacks of other bosses, Malgor, Serath, and Veynar, were also significantly weakened.

Furthermore, the entire late-game mechanics of PoE 2 were adjusted. The game director explicitly admitted that Delirium mechanic was too difficult compared to other mechanics in the game, therefore, the resilience and damage scaling of enemies in the fog of war were halved.

In addition, rituals were adjusted to make them easier to deal with. Bosses now appear at staggered times and stack less frequently, thus avoiding the boss overload common in high-level battles.

For these veteran players, the campaign mode has become too easy. One post bluntly stated, "PoE 2 is too easy now, completely inferior to PoE 1. Enemies are weak, one-shotting them, and there are almost no boss mechanics."

In the comments below, I saw many others expressing similar views. They pointed out that PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0 contains numerous overly powerful builds, and in the current economic system, acquiring gear using Path of Exile 2 Currency is relatively easy. This further widens the gap between elite and casual players, allowing the former to possess far more powerful gear.

The Still Too Difficult Viewpoint

Hardcore players and Solo Self-Found (SSF) players hold drastically different opinions. For these players, Return of the Ancients still presents a significant challenge, despite improvements in the gameplay experience.

One player with 130 hours of playtime mentioned PoE 2 campaign, saying that he could barely manage because he had spent a considerable amount of time planning character builds in Excel before Patch 0.5.0 was released. He believes that without such meticulous preparation, the gameplay experience would be drastically different. Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients remains difficult to pick up and strongly discourages players from trying it.

The game forces players to follow preset build guides because resetting skill points is costly, and the limited number of skill and support gems available early in the game prevents the exploration of alternative strategies.

Furthermore, for hardcore players and Solo Self-Found (SSF) players, the weakened bosses haven't made the game easier; rather, they've reduced the likelihood of instant death from a single mistake. Farming monsters remains arduous, and the currency needed to add gem slots is still extremely difficult to obtain; failure can lead to prolonged stagnation.

PoE 2 vs PoE 1

Many players like to compare the difficulty of PoE 2 with PoE 1, believing that PoE 2 is significantly easier. They argue that after PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0, it seems to be heading in a direction where victory is easily achieved as long as you have enough funds, lacking depth and complexity.

PoE 1 is generally considered a deeper and more complex game, its difficulty achievable through player knowledge, ultimately allowing players to create extremely powerful and comfortable characters through their own efforts.

During gameplay, players can enhance their characters to near-invincibility by stacking spell suppression, maximizing resistances, and critical strike immunity. Its endgame content also provides players with a higher ceiling for self-challenge. Therefore, players who have played both games generally prefer PoE 1. The latest PoE 1 content, 3.29 League, is also coming, scheduled for release at 1 PM PST on July 24, 2026.

I believe Path of Exile 1 allows players to maximize the use of game content. Its difficulty lies in mastering the system and optimizing character building; you need a very thorough understanding of almost everything in the game. Path of Exile 2's difficulty, on the other hand, seems more artificially inflated. Spending more on Path of Exile 2's Currency seems to lower the difficulty, while spending less seems to increase it.

Key Issue

This research found that the main difference between players stems from their builds. Players using powerful character builds find the game easy, while those trying unconventional or inefficient skills struggle.

The game's balance is, in my opinion, the worst among all ARPGs. The performance difference between an initial character build (playable without gear) and an initial character build (with gear) is astronomical.

This leads to a strange phenomenon: within the same week of the game's release, the same patch might be labeled as too easy or too difficult by different players.
