Even before the official launch of the cute anime MMORPG MapleStory 2, the game is in trouble with Gold Spammers. The developers have already initiated countermeasures.

The Headstart of MapleStory 2 took place last week, the official release was yesterday - and already gold farmers, spammers, and bots flood the game.

Barely started, already a "gold-spam-war"

What happened? Right after Heading MapleStory 2, players complained about Gold Spammers. Other players and bots flood the chat with offers for gold. Players are not only disturbed by the fear that the entire economy of the MMO will be ruined. Even for the release, the situation has not improved drastically.

How do the developers react? The Nexon team stated that they are aware of the problem. Players should not communicate with any gold sellers in the chat and whoever buys or sells gold will be tracked back and blocked by logs.

Nick Smith, for example, writes on MassivelyOP: "I played non-stop in the last 9 days and had a wonderful time. There is so much to do. MapleStory 2 is a very creative game. Getting rid of Goldfarm spam will make it even better. "

While I’ve admittedly not been following MapleStory 2 very closely, I’ve heard that Nexon America has tweaked the English version of the game, cutting back on the pay-to-win parts of the original. While they, of course, intend for players to spend money, it mostly goes on convenience items (like quicker fast-travel) and cosmetic items for your bobble-headed avatar. That said, it is possible to sell gear to players for cash-shop currency. A curious way to make a virtual buck or two if you snag a rare item you can’t use, and hopefully not too unbalancing due to being co-op.

I never quite got along with the original game – it was just a bit too messy for me – but it seems that people are broadly pleased with the sequel so far. It’s a tough act to follow, living up to the nostalgic expectations of a generation of players (many of the teens at the time), but reviews seem mostly positive. From the little bit I’ve seen streamed (I’m downloading the game to give it a poke this evening) larger co-op battles are chaotic and hard to follow, but solo or small group play feels a lot more readable, and the level design looks frequently cute and clever.

If you’re not too familiar with video games, or if you’re a casual player, there’s a good chance that you’ve never heard of MapleStory. And even if you’re a hardcore gamer, if you live in North America, the odds are strong that you’ve never played the game. There’s an argument to be made that within the U.S., there’s no game that’s more cult or niche.

Not a lot of people talk about it, and it doesn’t make headlines — why should it? After all, the side-scrolling MMORPG is an astounding 13 years old at this point. But it’s still plugging away, and according to publisher Nexon, tens of millions of Americans play the game. A nice 69 million players are registered for the English-language version of MapleStory, and it’s on the strength of those numbers that the first-ever MapleStory Fest touched down in Los Angeles.

The fanfest was free for players to register for, and over 500 attendees (plus guests) showed up at the Fonda Theater on Saturday, April 14. Before the doors opened at 9:30 a.m., there was a line wrapped once and a half around the block with players eagerly waiting to get in. There were panels, announcements, booths with games, demos … and yes, there were cosplayers.

The MapleStory fanbase has an interesting relationship with Nexon and the developers, as this is the only video game company that freely allows artists to create art and merchandise for MapleStory intellectual property without fear of litigation. In fact, at the regular MapleStory events in South Korea, fan vendors are invited to set up shop. And for the Fest in Los Angeles, Nexon brought in four of the top-selling fan creators to set up booths on the rooftop of the Fonda Theater and sell their wares. By the afternoon, a good amount of items at all four booths were completely sold out.

Fans were given a passport at the door and collected stamps at the various booths, and everyone who attended absolutely wanted to try out everything on offer, including a special endgame boss fight challenge, and some hands-on time with the upcoming MapleStory mobile game — which will mark the first time that the franchise comes to an iOS device.

In between booth time, there were trivia challenges for in-game credits, and two big panels with developers. The biggest announcements came in the afternoon when the development team made an expected announcement: MapleStory 2, the 3D sequel to the core game that has been out in Korea since 2015, will be opening its North American English-language beta on May 9. The crowd erupted at the announcement, but absolutely went wild for the unexpected announcement: all those in attendance at the MapleStory Fest automatically earned their spot in the beta.

From everyone I spoke with at Nexon, the first MapleStory Fest was a huge success. The Fonda was packed, everyone was thrilled to be there, and virtually no one left from the time the doors opened until things closed down with costume and dance contests. Clearly, the fanbase is deeply connected to this game, even if the gallons of virtual ink spilled on video games on a daily basis rarely touch on this corner of the gaming world.

While I spoke with a lot of gamers outside of the Fest who only really know MapleStory as a Korean game, the vast majority of those who have logged into the game in the past two years living in the United States. And as you might expect from a free-to-play MMO that’s over a decade old, a lot of those players have grown up playing the game. And that’s a big part of the reason why Los Angeles was chosen as the location for this event.

I had a chance to speak with Jungsoo Lee, President of Nexon America, at the Fest. He said they were “kind of cautious” not knowing whether fans would turn out for the event, given it was their first in the 13-year history of the game, but was “really happy” when he saw the lines prior to the doors opening and witnessed the excitement of the fans. He also talked about the balancing act of keeping an old game alive while announcing MapleStory 2 at an event celebrating the original.

“We are hoping that both games will grow old together,” Lee said. “It’s not like a sequel. We believe that [MapleStory 2] shares the same core, but it provides a different experience and a different dimension.”

Lee said that as early as next month, they may start planning more MapleStory events in the United States. There will be a significant waiting period before we know whether MapleStory 2 will similarly end up being a long-lasting success, but MapleStory Fest proved that there are dedicated fans out there playing relatively obscure games every single day. The passionate fanbase of this game just received a reward for their devotion, and MapleStory Fest served as a good reminder that it’s a massive, massive world of gaming out there. Even a game that’s a teenager can receive its day in the sun.

Anyone who plays MapleStory—an online multiplayer game created by South Korean developer Wizet—soon learns to loathe what gamers call "looting." As in most fantasy massively multiplayer online games, or MMOs, players spend much of their time trotting about a large virtual realm in battle with vicious monsters. These monsters, once vanquished, leave behind in-game currency and all sorts of valuable or crucial items—which the victorious player is then obliged to wander over and click a button to collect, or "loot." Thousands of monsters populate the game's Maple World, each one carrying something for players to capture. Countless hours may be frittered away in this repetitive pursuit. Looting, for the dogged MapleStory player, becomes a maddening chore.

But MapleStory also features what it calls a Cash Shop. There, eager players may exchange real-world money for a number of in-game items—including, indispensable, a digital pet that offers companionship while also taking care of the looting, usually available for about $5 every 90 days. "The pet follows you around while you play, and items near the pet magically jump off the ground and into your inventory," explains Uzo Olisemeka, a longtime fan of MapleStory who insists that paying not to have to loot an item hundreds of times every hour is "a steal." MapleStory is officially free to play, and nobody is required to spend money in the Cash Shop. At least in theory. "The game is practically impossible to enjoy at higher levels without a pet looting for you," Olisemeka points out. "But nobody thinks of it as a subscription fee, and everyone gladly pays for their pet."

But what exactly does a player of MapleStory own when they spend money on their digital pet? The question is becoming increasingly relevant at a time when more and more of our property exists in the virtual sphere: digitally downloaded movies, television programs, Kindle books, MP3s. Nexon, the maker of the unbearably adorable side-scrolling MMO MapleStory, has released an infographic claiming that more than 17,800 years have been cumulatively spent by players in the game since launch.

MapleStory is a light free-to-play MMO that takes players on a journey through Maple World, ultimately facing antagonist the Black Mage. Players level-up characters through typical RPG methods such as defeating monsters and working jobs, and can interact with other players via parties and guilds, and by playing minigames. The game was developed in South Korea by Wizet, which was acquired by its publisher Nexon thanks to the game's success.

Interestingly, there are currently more divorced player characters in the game (84,075) than married (79,944), out of a total of 12,985,342 players to date.

To be clear, these numbers represent the original MapleStory -- not MapleStory 2, the sequel released in July 2015.

In fact, the original title is still going strong, with a big update coming on December 15, including new abilities, elite equipment sets, high-level content, improved quest rewards, a new job advancement, and more.

MapleStory, the long-running MMORPG that gives players the chance to befriend others while building adorable little anime-style avatars, has teamed up with the creative force of Evangelion to bring an all-new event to the game that old-school players will really enjoy. The collaboration, announced today, brings Evangelion's 3 main characters -- Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley-Soryu, and Rei Ayanami -- into the world through a crossover plotline that perfectly fits early 00's anime fan fiction, and we mean that in the kindest way possible.

Basically: an inter-dimensional rift has opened and dropped the three teenage pilots into the vast world of MapleStory. It's up to the game's players to meet and assist the trio in order to get them used to their new surroundings (and, eventually, one would guess, back to the right universe). In order to do that, players will have to complete different challenges, and as a reward, new perks and accessories have been added to the game for players to add to their collections.

Here's what the event offers, according to MapleStory's developers at Nexon:

The Evangelion pilots are lost in their new surroundings in Maple World, so players are tasked with completing daily quests to help them navigate and become more familiar. Maplers can interact with Shinji, Rei and Asuka to earn EVA Coins to spend on limited-time items and must fend off waves of invasions from Angel enemies to save Maple World.

Other key features of the MapleStory X Evangelion event include:

● Evangelion Coin Shop – After completing Evangelion-themed events and quests, players will earn EVA Coins to trade in for limited-time items including chairs, medals and even permanent equips;

● Evangelion Style Boxes – For a limited time, players can purchase special surprise boxes with accessories and outfits to dress up their MapleStory character in Evangelion style;

● Exclusive Items – Players can also purchase special random boxes and open them up to find Evangelion-themed items including androids, as well as purchase hair coupons designed to look just like characters from Evangelion.

MapleStory has been active for nearly two decades, launching in 2003 and out-living almost all of that era's MMORPGs. For players who started way back when this might be the perfect mix of nostalgia needed to get back into the game.

MapleStory shot to fame when it was released back in the early 2000s, and despite the game being out for quite some time, it still features a huge fan base. The service, currently available in beta form in the UK, Europe, and the US, allows Mac gamers a great and easy way to play any game from Steam or Battle.net regardless of whether it offers macOS/Mac OS X support, or how powerful your Mac is. You can run the latest graphically-demanding PC games on a basic Mac Mini if you really want to.

How is this witchcraft managed? It’s all down to Nvidia server sites scattered across Europe and the US which handle all the processing required by the games. When you select a game you’d like to play on your Mac, Nvidia’s impressively powerful servers (which we’re told provides the equivalent to GTX 1080 performance) run the game remotely before sending it to your Mac via the internet.

The best part? Every game that’s available to play on GeForce Now for Mac has been optimized for streaming, meaning you’ll be getting the best quality possible without having to delve in and tweak the graphics settings yourself.

Oh, and Nvidia keeps a cached version of every game available on Steam and Battle.net on their servers, meaning there’s no waiting around while the game downloads. You should be playing the game within around 30 seconds of hitting the play button!

Of course, the performance will somewhat depend on your internet speeds and location of the servers, as someone with high-speed internet that lives 500 miles from a server site will get better response times than someone with slow internet in more remote areas.

With that being said, we’ve generally been impressed with the response times provided by GeForce Now for Mac when connected to Wi-Fi and Ethernet, although admittedly we have access to 200mb+ internet speeds not available in many parts of the UK.

The service is completely free to use while it’s in beta too, allowing prospective Mac gamers to dive in right now and make the most of the service. Nvidia has reassured Macworld UK that the service will stay free until at least early 2018, if not longer. The only catch? High levels of interest in the service mean those that want to test it out must first join a waiting list.

Once you’ve got access, it’s as simple as signing into your Steam account, selecting MapleStory and hitting that play button! You’ll be playing in no time.

But what if you don’t have access to a high-speed internet connection to use Nvidia’s streaming service? Don’t fret as there is another way to play MapleStory on your Mac, but it will come at a cost of performance and storage space. Full disclaimer: we haven’t tested MapleStory specifically with this method, continue will be at your own risk.

If you’re willing to give it a go, another way to play MapleStory on Mac is to split your Mac hard drive and run Windows 10 on a separate partition using Apple’s Boot Camp software. This method requires you to (semi-permanently) partition your hard drive and sacrifice a big chunk of Mac storage space, so consider your options before doing so.

We suggest providing your Boot Camp partition with as much storage as possible, as the game and operating system will take a considerable amount of space - MapleStory is 14GB while Windows 10 requires around 20GB. Admittedly you can change the size of your partition once you’ve installed Windows 10, but it can create issues – read more about how to partition your Mac’s HDD here.

As said above, performance may be sub-optimal depending on the specification of your Mac, so you may need to tweak settings for a decent gameplay experience.

MapleStory, that wacky MMORPG that just refuses to die is about to embark on its next journey. That’s right, after numerous betas (I played in one, I’m not ashamed to say that), MapleStory 2 is almost upon us. Everything that made the first game so enjoyable has been brought over and the gameplay mechanics have been tweaked. Visually, the game has received a huge advancement; it’s all 3D. While the first game was stuck as a 2D sidescrolling game, this time you’re in a vast 3D world. Also, while MapleStory was a grind fest, this time the quests you do will provide more experience and remove some of that tedious grinding. While my time with the beta was brief, the game definitely feels like a modern MMO. These changes, bring the cutesy title into the leagues of games such as Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft. It’s still free to play as well, so there’s a lot going on and basically, no cost for you to check it out.
