MapleStory, the iconic global MMORPG from Nexon America, is bringing the first phase of its long-awaited battle with the sinister villain, the Black Mage. Between November 14 through November 28, players can take part in the “Gathering of Heroes” event to join the Maple Alliance and prepare their armies to soon combat the Black Mage.
The Black Mage has long been the main antagonist behind MapleStory. His story originated with the role of bringing balance to Maple World but turned dark as he realized the only way to save Maple World was to destroy it. Now that his seal has been broken, players will need to work together to defeat the legendary boss.
The Gathering of Heroes event adds the Maple Alliance outpost, where players can hone their skills and prepare to level up in preparation of for their battle against the Black Mage, as well as adds various leveling updates. The main goal of the Alliance is to gather “Determination” and power up the holy light in the outpost to be able to fight the Black Mage. Rewards include the Gathering of Heroes exclusive Pet Box, Item Box, Beauty Box, and Money Box.
Starting today, players can reach level 200 by participating in the Tera Burning Project event to prepare to meet the level requirements for battle against the Black Mage. During this event, players will be able to create and assign their new character as their Tera Burning character, which will receive a Snail pet and have the ability to gain two extra levels each time it levels up until reaching level 200.
Additionally, characters level 61 and higher can move to the Maple Alliance outpost by accepting the Destiny Awaits quest and start the Journey of Destiny to unlock new areas and new enemies to defeat. In addition, players who deal the most damage when defeating Elite Monsters will receive Alliance Support for 30 seconds, which can include troop support, bombardment support, or airship support.
Lastly, the first area in Tenebris to unlock is Moonbridge. Players level 200 and above will have to navigate areas filled with hordes of monsters while shrouded in dark fog to ultimately defeat a powerful monster guarding the path forward.

The original MapleStory has been incredibly successful, particularly in Asia, over the course of the 15 years it's been in service. The sequel, MapleStory 2, originally launched in South Korea back in 2015, but had its Western (global) launch last month and is now available via Steam. With that being the case, we reached out to Miyoung Oh, lead game designer at Nexon Korea, to learn more about the game, its launch, and the road ahead.
Give us the elevator pitch — what is MapleStory 2?
MapleStory 2 is an all-new game in the popular MapleStory franchise in full 3D and provides a unique experience that both hardcore and casual MMORPG players can enjoy. Like the original, MapleStory 2 boasts a rich variety of content: from immersive epic quests to difficult dungeons and raids for players looking for a greater challenge. Additionally, MapleStory 2 features all-new creative features for casual players to enjoy. Players can customize and design their own outfits, construct their dream homes, improve their instrument skills, play fun mini-games, and so much more! Regardless of your playstyle, MapleStory 2 has you covered with its passionate community of fellow Maplers!
What has the feedback been like from players since launch?
We have received a lot of positive feedback regarding the game since launch. Starting with our very stable launch (especially for an MMORPG), many players praised the various customization aspects and casual activities found within the game. What sets MapleStory 2 apart from other MMORPGs is the sheer variety of different activities players can enjoy within the game. In addition to going on adventures, fighting monsters, and completing quests, players can become a fashion designer by designing their own clothes, an architect by constructing their dream houses, or even become a musician while composing their own music scores. Casual players who are not into dungeons and raids have been enjoying playing mini-games, exploring the world, and excitedly posting creative designs within the MapleStory 2 community. There are so many activities that players will almost never run out of things to do. One of the best pieces of feedback we have received was regarding our team's stance on having no "pay to win" items in the global version of our game. As part of our effort to give players the best MapleStory 2 experience, we have removed every bit of possible pay-to-win content from the game. Players definitely loved the change, which we also feel is important to the long-term success of the game. Since then, we have also been communicating with our players frequently to provide a level of transparency with our community and to introduce more features and improvements based on our players' direct feedback.
What have you learned from the previous game and what have you taken from that into the second?
MapleStory has been in live service for quite some time, and we have definitely learned and experienced much throughout the years. When preparing to launch MapleStory 2, we wanted to focus mainly on three key things: stability, communication, and content. First, we had made sure we were confident in the global servers' stability before launching the game to the public. Throughout our two closed betas, we have done numerous testing to secure stable servers where all our players can play without running into any critical issues. Secondly, we made sure to pay close attention to our players' feedback. We have been communicating directly to our players through various social channels, and have been providing detailed information frequently through our Producer Blogs as well. We believe that part of MapleStory 2's successful launch is from the valuable feedback we have discussed and received from our players. Lastly, we have prepared and are continuing to plan many engaging events and content updates for the future to ensure players have the best experience possible. Although MapleStory and MapleStory 2 are two different games, we have tried our best to combine all of the successful elements of MapleStory with MapleStory 2's new and unique gameplay to create an all-new MMORPG experience for our community.
How do you approach both character building and progression?
In a character building perspective, you get a sense of growth as you gradually learn skills in the process of leveling up each time. You learn the basic skills of the relevant job once you reach Lv. 50, and you can freely change the skills based on the content you play. We approached this in a direction where there's not [many hurdles] in testing out various builds. Spec-wise, there are attribute points and skill points in the leveling up of the character, progress from gears, and progress from additional content such as pets or gemstones that are provided in stages for you to constantly have things to do, and enjoy and progress through various methods.

Dear Maplers,
This week’s update will be mainly focused on upcoming changes to UGC - mainly the Design Shop. Currently, we are seeing a truly massive number of creations from the community in the Design Shop, and in order to enhance the overall experience for both shoppers and creators we are going to make a few important changes.
Objective of the Change
The main objective of the changes are to ensure that:
The Thought Process
We reviewed current design shop structure and noticed a few issues. Because the cost of registering items on the shop is free for the first one, and only slowly rising with additional listings, and because we are refunding the full Listing Fee when design submissions are removed from the Design Shop, we have seen many players blatantly copying another player’s design, or uploading the content which clearly violates the ToS without any risk of losing Merets.
This was hurting the shop in many ways:
Thus, we have decided to tweak the shop fee structure to provide higher upside for the great content creators while better filtering out designs being submitted by bad actors.
Upcoming Changes
With the update on November 8th, we are going to change three things:
This change is to ensure that original creators have the potential to succeed in the shop. Also, by providing a 90 day registration period with a greater cut for the designers, we hope to see more meaningful creations and fewer items overloading the store, making the original creations harder to find.
Finally, by doing so, players duplicating designs to make easy Merets will now risk losing actual initial investments. We have a 10 day review period on Merets being delivered to creators, and will work to ensure that anyone who submits designs in bad faith will not be able to get any Merets from the sales and lose their original investments.
Review Process Improvements
The Customer Support staff handling the UGC submission and review process have been going through very tough times. We saw a much higher volume of creations coming in than expected, and lots of high level terms created confusion within the team. Additionally, since we work with teams in other countries, there are differing understandings of what is considered unacceptable. As a result, there were cases where some designs have been incorrectly removed. We sincerely apologize for your inconvenience and to improve this we have made a few internal changes to improve on our consistency:
While this might take more time to get to the level where everyone is satisfied, we promise you will see improvements in the UGC review process quickly, and please continue providing feedback if you see issues with our decisions.
This week’s update will include few important improvements.
Fairfight Update: We are reducing the impact to players above Lv. 50, resulting in most players seeing a 10%+ increase in damage, and the classes with a high dependency on buffs and passives will see even greater damage increases
10053 Issue: We are adding a new feature to the game with the Chaos Rising Update on November 8th that helps mitigate disconnections. This change will automatically seek to re-establish connection with the server, and it’s highly likely you won’t notice the disconnection after we apply the change. Some of the cases you will see loading icon on the center for very short time, but if you are experiencing long disconnections, you may see multiple reconnection attempts.
Please note that if you click Cancel during the reconnection attempt, you will be disconnected and receive the 10053 error. There are also a few edge cases that the game client will default to a disconnection with the error code, including but not limited to:
We expect most previously affected players will not see the 10053 issue after the update but we will keep monitoring to make sure. With this change, we hope to make everyone’s gameplay experience much more enjoyable.
Meso Seller and Bots: We are continuing to identify and block bots. Last week we have banned 30,000+ accounts and yesterday alone we have banned 10,000+ accounts. Also, to combat ad spams via walls and ad balloons we will be adding level requirements to use them. Also, whispers will now have a Lv. 25 requirement and group chats a Lv. 50 requirement. We are discussing additional measures and hope we can make gradual improvements to combat the bots without affecting your gameplay
Dungeon Limit Reset (BETA): It is finally coming to the game, please try out the dungeon limit reset beta feature and see how it is working for your daily grind. Remember, you can reset the limit only once per account each week, so choose your character wisely.
QoL Improvements: We are improving a few functions - house size reduction, Wardrobe Swap, Quickslot Bar swapping - also we are adding five different weapon templates for our talented designers!
Thanksgiving UPDATE!: We are going to celebrate the Thanksgiving with a ton of content. You will have the chance to earn a special turkey mount, decorations, outfits and other vanity items. Please look out for more details, and join us on Thanksgiving weekend for more!
December Teaser: We are already preparing our update for December, we will start to share some of the updates and improvements for December around Thanksgiving.
Optimization: This is still in our books, but we currently don’t have any details to share yet.
We will be providing much more detailed updates on the Chaos Raids with the patch notes and other announcements. While we thrive to deliver the best gaming experience to the community, some of the decisions might not seem perfect, and our actions might seem slow. We understand the expectation is high, and will work hard to improve ourselves to satisfy our great community. Please continue to provide us feedback, as while we might not be leaving comments on each individual comments, you can be assured we are reading and listing up the feedback to review.
This week is going to be huge for the community, and looking forward to see the community knocking off the Chaos Raids. It will be challenging but you will love it!

As previously mentioned in the last State of the Game producer blog, the goal is to get the next update out on November 8th. This update will bring a major amount of content with the beginning of Chaos Raids. Players all around are eagerly waiting for Chaos Raids, as they bring 10 players sized party content and the chance at Legendary gear.
Three Chaos Raids currently announced are coming in November if everything goes accordingly for Nexon. The first two Shadow Altar and Moonlight Fortress will be available on November 8, with the third one coming later. Ludibrium Clock Tower is planned for November 30, the more difficult raid where you can get a Legendary weapon.
Nexon is currently ranking each raid from easiest to hardest as Shadow Altar – Moonlight Fortress – Ludibrium Clock Tower
Legendary headgear, gloves, and shoes can be obtained from the Shadow Altar. Players will likely grind the Altar to get their gear score up to take on the Moonlight Fortress next. The Moonlight Fortress will contain Legendary Tops and Bottoms, prepping players for the long wait on the Ludibirum Clock Tower.
Three different gear sets will be available with different passives and triggers, each cosmetically shown above.
Nexon is going to beta test an idea around the dungeon limit/cap coming with the November 8 update. The plan is to introduce a reset function that can be used once a week. This reset feature will reset your daily and weekly cap. However, it can only be used once a week and when you have reached your weekly cap.
For example, by the third day, if you did 10 dungeons daily, you’ll be at your 30 dungeons weekly cap. Then you can use the reset function (once per week), and do another 30 dungeons that week. It will also allow you to do another on that same day, letting you do 20 dungeons in one of those three days.
Nexon’s Jungsoo Lee, Head of Nexon America, goes on to mention the reset has no change to the loot table for dungeons. He also notes that the double loot event for dungeons will continue for another week. This continues to affect both Normal Dungeons and Hard Dungeons.
We double checked with Lee on Twitter to make sure the reset feature is free.
The producer blog also announces the next planned event coming to MapleStory 2, Thanksgiving. Without saying too much about the event, Lee says a wild turkey will be invading and there will be “many different activities” to get rewards and an exclusive turkey mount. Take a look at the turkey below:
Other Briefly Mentioned Topics
Lee briefly talks about a few other topics at the end of the producer blog, like the previous one. These include the Fairfight change coming, continuous work on the 10053 error, banning over 1,000 Meso Sellers & bots daily, etc. There are also plans to change the UGC system slightly:
“We are still working on a few changes to the current system. We can assure you it won’t impact the general use of UGC, and our goal is to create clearer guidelines about what is and is not allowed on top of what is mentioned in the Terms of Service. We’d also like to ensure that the Design Shop works as a function of talented creators and designers to deliver creative, quality designs which can sell well on the shop, also providing more options for customization for all players.”
What do you think of the dungeon limit reset planned for November? It doesn’t get rid of the cap, but it lets players complete up to 60 dungeons in a week. Which is going to be necessary when the double loot event for dungeons ends, and the loot slows down quite a bit.

It has officially been a month since Maplestory 2 launched back on October 1. At this point and time, we’re quite certain that many players are already sitting comfortably at max level 60. Though, if you’re a veteran Maplers that has been playing since the first game, we all know that one character just isn’t enough. So here are some tips on how to level fast in Maplestory 2!
For real, though. Don’t sleep on your main quests. The main quest reward gives so much EXP that you can reach level 50 easily in approximately eight hours. If you’re leveling a second character, it should go even faster. Just skip all the dialogue and cutscenes. Make sure to not get sidetracked by side quests! Plenty of chance, later on, to come back and do them if you care about the story. They are mostly fetching quests so you’re not missing out much by focusing on the main story.
You can’t do this next bit if it is your first character. But if you happen to be leveling an alt, dump those Rotor Walkie Talkies into the Golden Bank chest. This will help your alts move faster as they go from one place to another while completing quests. Alternatively, if you wanna save those tickets then just use the Taxi – you just have to pay Mesos. Other than Walkie Talkies, you could also pass your alt a fast mount from your main account. Anything that can give it a little boost, really.
You would think that the last ten levels are the hardest, but it’s surprisingly easy. At this point, you’ll be out of main quests. Is this where we succumb to side quests? Hell no. This is where your Life Skills come in handy since they give flat EXP.
It’s essential that once you get your first performing sheet from the quest NPC, you don’t use it on manual performance. Well with the exception of those for the quest. This is because when you perform manually, it consumes the sheet usage amount. However, if done via auto-perform, the usage amount will not be consumed. So once you get to 50, pop that auto-perform 30-minute / 1-hour ticket and you’ll be level 60 in no time.
Besides performing, you could also fish despite it being slightly complicated. It’s really not worth it using auto-fish ticket from beginner level. Ranking fishing up is different too. It’s a whole lot to get into so I won’t but if I do, it has to be a standalone guide. If you don’t mind adding some extra hours to your process, manually get your fishing level to Intermediate then auto-fish from there.
So how do you decide which one today? Simple – check the top left of your screen and look at the ticker. If it’s double EXP day for performing, then perform and vice versa.
You could solo-surf this but being in a party would be better. It’s really up to you though, it’s just faster with a party and that’s the point of this guide, yeah? Currently, World Bosses give ~15% EXP at level 50. So if you’re down to channel surf and hunt for bosses or is simply just out of auto-tickets, you could opt to do this. Check this MapleStory 2 wiki for approximate spawn time. Here’s the list of World Bosses. Make sure you’re killing those on the list and not Elite Bosses.
That’s it! It’s pretty easy to level in MapleStory 2. There are, of course, other ways to boost yourself. For example, if your main has Rank 4 Cooking, Pine Mushroom Stew gives 50% EXP boost for 2-hours. But, we’re going for the simplest methods. So it’s really just – do your main quests then auto-ticket life skill your way to 60. Personally, from 50 to 60, I left my Priest to smash tunes (auto-perform) for 6-hours and when I woke up, it was 60.
If you’re not yet 60, get there quick since Chaos Mode is coming on November 8 and you don’t want to miss that. Struggling with getting your gear score up to 2100? Stay tuned for my next guide!
